Located in part of the Old Castle (Altes Schloß), once the court of the House of Württemberg, the State Museum charts the history of the Swabian region from the Stone Age to recent times. Exhibits include some of the world's oldest sculptures, the preserved grave and burial artefacts of a Celtic prince, Roman remains, medieval works of art and an extensive collection of costume, textiles and glass.

The Künstkammer, in one of the corner towers, contains the dukes' treasury and the Württemberg crown jewels. There is also a fascinating display of sundials, astronomical clocks and scientific instruments, as well as a separate museum devoted to musical instruments in the nearby Stiftfruchtkasten at Schillerplatz 1.
