The Natural History Museum is located on two sites at Rosensteinpark in Stuttgart's Bad Cannstatt district. The main part of the museum (Museum Schloss Rosenstein) is housed in a former palace of the Württenberg monarchy, while the fossil collection is in the Museum am Löwentor.

The modern interior of the Schloss Rosenstein is a result of the palace being completely gutted by fire in 1944, but it serves as ideal exhibition space for some of the museum's vast collection of geological, palaentological, zoological, entomological and botanical specimens.

The museum provides an overview of the evolution, life and habitat of many living organisms as well as others that have become extinct through human intervention. It also supports a scientific research department dedicated to preserving and disseminating information and protecting endangered species.
