Opened in 1986 to celebrate the centenary of the first motorcar, the museum houses around 100 lovingly preserved vehicles. The earliest is a motorbike (the Daimler Reitwagen) from 1885, closely followed by Benz's tricycle, 'Motorwagen', of January 1886 which is credited as the world's first car.

The exhibition traces the history of the automobile from these beginnings through to the latest technological innovations. For enthusiasts, Mercedes-Benz also conduct tours, by appointment, of their factories and classic car workshops.

An online version of the museum catalogue lists the majority of cars on display.
